Study Reveals Majority of Today’s Teenagers Want to Make a Difference

The young people of today may have been frequently portrayed as selfie-obsessed and game-addicted generation, yet the teens belonging to those groups of youth is only a small portion.

Based on a research conducted by a think-tank company called Demos, the results show that as much as 80% of today’s population of young people are more concerned with social problems when compared to recent past generations of teenagers. According to Demos, about 66% percent of the teachers they interviewed agree with the said findings.

Most teenagers express their awareness and concern by way of social media sites and therefore often go unrecognized and misinterpreted. Still the Demos research found out that 87% of today’s young generation think of social media as the most effective way of getting behind current social issues, of which 27% have actively participated in social awareness campaigns launched via Facebook and/or Twitter.

The author of the Demos report, Jonathan Birdwell strongly believes that the current generation of teens really want to make a difference in their respective community. Rather than rely on political leaders to solve social problems, they get involved in crowd-sourced collaborations using their laptops and smartphones to take part in any way they can.

The Role of Parents and Teachers in Guiding the Young Generation’s Social Responsiveness

A youth social action partnership known as Generation Change expressed appreciation for the Demos report through the organization’s co-chair Sophie Livingstone. She that while the young generation exist amidst an ageing population and in a society entrenched in economic uncertainty and systemic inequality, future generations are bound to face far worse consequences of climate change than what their parents experienced in their youth.

That is why Ms. Livingstone gave emphasis on the responsibility of adults to help equip the young people with skills that will enable them to create real change; by creating high quality opportunities for taking action and structures for volunteering in community programs

One of the most suggested ways by which parents and teachers can nurture desires of teenagers to make a difference is to supplement them with documentary films. Documentaries can give them glimpses of worlds beyond their reach, presenting information and situations that they do not normally encounter in social media platforms.

Guidance of adults are still necessary since some documentaries tend to be opinionated and often controversial. Footages tend to be raw as most makers of documentary films use graphic scenes to drive home their points of view.
